Music therapy is a research-based practice and allied health profession in which music is used to actively support people to improve their health, functioning and wellbeing. A Registered Music Therapist (RMT) has completed an accredited tertiary course in music therapy at an Australian tertiary institution.
Our music therapists discuss and assess the needs with clients to tailor design therapy sessions based on such needs and by using different music based interventions and techniques to address the therapeutic goals.
We believe all children and people in general have innate musicality. Your child does not have to show musical talents to be able to do music therapy.
We use fun activities, music games, movement to songs, improvisation on instruments, singing, instrument playing, receptive music listening, song writing and lyrics discussion to achieve cognitive, psycho-social, emotional, physical, communicative and spiritual needs.
It was published in Cochrane Review that music therapy was superior to placebo and standard care of children with Autism in social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communicative skills, initiating behaviour, socio-emotional reciprocity, joy, social adaption and parent-child relationship. It was found that there was no side effects caused by music therapy.
Numerous studies have been undertaken to investigate the effects of music therapy help in managing anxiety, aggressive behaviour. A study conducted by Hakvoort and colleagues (2015) investigated the effect of music therapy in managing anger, aggression and dysfunctional behaviour for people with psychosocial disability. It was found that music therapy improved coping and management of anger and aggression for people facing psychosocial challenges.
